SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator, 312-281 BC. AE (Bronze, 20 mm, 9.00 g, 12 h), Apamea on the Orontes, circa 300-281. Elephant standing right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟ[Υ] Horned head of a horse to left; below, anchor. SC 35. An interesting and beautiful piece, with a fine rendition of an elephant. Good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

According to Strabo (16.2.10), Seleukos I kept his 500 war elephants stabled at Apamea, thus explaining the appearance of this magnificent elephant on the obverse.
